No School - Monday, May 29, 2017
Forest Glen's 6th annual Love to Run Program has just wrapped up! This program introduces students to distance running and trains them for the Cellcom 5K. Students learned the importance of warm-ups, stretching, cool-downs, pacing, hydration, how to manage side-stitches and many other important tips to prepare them for distance running.
The runners started with a 1/2 mile run and built their way up to 3 miles. Our group was a good mixture of beginners and experienced runners who conquered those ten progressively longer training sessions. Over half of our runners participated in the Cellcom 5K! We are proud of all of our Love to Run Program participants; keep it up, runners!
On a personal note, six years ago, when I asked Mrs. Ruh if Forest Glen had a running program and she said there was not, I took her up on her offer to help me create Forest Glen's first run club. As run club lead coach, I was excited to share my running knowledge and experience with the 3rd and 4th grade students. The "Love to Run" club continues to flourish because I have a great co-coach in Mrs. O'Neil and many volunteer parents who help out.
Because my youngest son is leaving Forest Glen this year, it is time for me to move on. It is bittersweet for me, because I will miss coaching the kids, but I know the club will be in excellent hands. I am excited to announce the new members of the coaching team starting in 2018. Gary Brown, a parent of students at Forest Glen, will be lead coach for the Love to Run Club beginning 2018. He is an accomplished athlete who has competed in many marathons and triathalons. Erin Patchak and Sherry O'Neil are both teachers in the Howard/Suamico School District and happen to be avid runners who have participated in many 1/2 marathons. I wish the best for them as they take on this rewarding opportunity to share their own running experiences and expertise with the students.
Thank you, to the students, staff, parents, and volunteers who helped me keep this club going. It was truly a rewarding experience to introduce the children to endurance running.
